Description

Scientific Name: (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) Origin: Amazon River Basin, South America

Physical Characteristics The Silver Arowana is an imposing and majestic fish that can grow quite large, often exceeding 3 feet (90 cm) in the wild. Its most striking feature is its large, metallic scales, which can reflect pink, blue, or green hues depending on the lighting, though they are primarily a brilliant silver.

  • Body Shape: It possesses a compressed, ribbon-like body that allows it to glide effortlessly through the water. The dorsal and anal fins extend almost all the way to the tail, giving it a streamlined appearance.

  • The Mouth: It has a distinct superior (upward-facing) mouth. The lower jaw is like a trapdoor, and the two “whiskers” (barbels) at the tip are used to sense movement on the water’s surface.

  • Eyes: The large eyes are positioned near the top of the head, allowing the fish to spot prey both in the water and above the surface.

Behavior and Habitat In nature, the Silver Arowana is a surface dweller. It is famous for its hunting ability; it can leap more than 5 feet out of the water to snatch insects, birds, or small bats from low-hanging branches, earning it the nickname “Water Monkey.”

Cultural Significance In the aquarium hobby, the Arowana is highly prized, particularly in Asian cultures where it is believed to bring good luck, wealth, and prosperity due to its resemblance to a Chinese dragon.
