Description
Scientific Name: Carassius auratus (Fancy variety) Common Name: Red Cap Gold Origin: Selectively bred (does not exist in the wild).
Physical Appearance The Red Cap Oranda is prized specifically for its specific coloration, often compared to the “Little Red Riding Hood” character.
-
The “Cap” (Wen): Unlike standard Orandas, where the fleshy growth might cover the entire face and cheeks, the Red Cap’s wen is typically restricted to the top of the cranium. This growth usually develops when the fish is 3–4 months old and intensifies in color as it matures.
-
Body and Color: The body is strictly white, which provides a dramatic canvas for the red head growth. The scales can be metallic or matte.
-
Fins: It possesses long, flowing, veil-like fins that are translucent or white. Like other Orandas, it has a dorsal fin and a split (double) tail fin.
Behavior and Temperament This fish is known for its gentle and friendly personality. It is a slow-moving scavenger that gets along well with other calm fancy goldfish varieties (like Black Moors or Ryukins). Because of its heavy head growth and round body, it is not a fast swimmer and can easily be outcompeted for food if kept with faster fish.
Care and Maintenance
-
Water Conditions: They prefer cooler water temperatures (65–75°F or 18–24°C) and neutral pH.
-
Filtration: Goldfish are messy eaters and produce a lot of waste, so strong biological filtration is essential to keep the water clear and safe.
-
Wen Care: The wen is sensitive to poor water quality and rough decorations; sharp rocks should be avoided in the tank to prevent scratching the delicate head growth.
