Description
The Rosy Barb, scientifically known as Pethia conchonius (formerly Puntius conchonius), is a highly active and captivating freshwater fish native to the streams, lakes, and rivers of South Asia, specifically originating from regions like northern India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. This species is defined by its striking coloration, which exhibits a strong sexual dimorphism (difference between males and females). The males are the main source of the species’ name, developing a vibrant rosy-red or deep claret flush across their flanks, especially during breeding periods, and often displaying a small black spot near the tail. Females are generally larger, rounder, and possess a more subdued, attractive silver, gold, or olive-pink coloration. Rosy Barbs are shoaling fish and must be kept in groups of at least five to six individuals to maintain their well-being and prevent fin-nipping behaviors directed at slower or long-finned tankmates. They are highly hardy and adaptable, tolerating a wide range of water conditions, including slightly cooler temperatures than many other tropical fish, making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. As omnivores, they are easy to feed, readily accepting a varied diet of flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods, and they are known to graze on algae and plant matter.
