Description
Scientific Name: Pterophyllum scalare Origin: South America (Amazon and Orinoco Basins)
Physical Characteristics The Angelfish has a unique shape designed for hiding among roots and plants.
-
Body Shape: It features a laterally compressed (flat) body that is distinctively diamond or arrowhead-shaped.
-
Fins: Its dorsal (top) and anal (bottom) fins are long and flowing, often exceeding the length of its body. It also has long, thin pelvic fins that look like feelers.
-
Coloration: The wild type is silver with dark vertical black stripes (zebra pattern). However, through breeding, they now come in many patterns such as Marble, Koi, Gold, Black, and Blushing.
-
Size: They can grow quite large, reaching up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length, but their fins can make them up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall.
Behavior and Temperament
-
Personality: They are intelligent and interactive fish that often learn to recognize their owners.
-
Aggression: While often sold as community fish, they are part of the Cichlid family. They are generally peaceful but can be territorial. They are opportunistic predators and will eat any fish small enough to fit in their mouth (like Neon Tetras).
-
Social Structure: They are best kept in groups of 5 or more when young. As they mature, they will pair off and can become aggressive toward others in the tank to protect their territory.
Care and Habitat
-
Tank Size: Because of their height, they require a tall aquarium. A minimum of 29–30 gallons is needed for a pair, but 55 gallons is better for a group.
-
Water Conditions: They prefer warm, tropical water (78°F–84°F) and slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5–7.0).
-
Diet: They are omnivores. They love frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and high-quality flake or pellet food.
