Black neon tetra

The Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) is a sleek and elegant freshwater fish from Brazil. Unlike the bright blue and red of the standard Neon Tetra, this species features a striking pattern of deep black and iridescent white/silver horizontal stripes, topped with a glowing red rim above the eye. Growing to about 4 cm (1.5 inches), they are peaceful, schooling fish that are exceptionally hardy—often more so than regular Neons—making them an excellent choice for beginner community tanks and planted aquascapes. Description

1. Origin & Taxonomy

  • Scientific Name: Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi

  • Origin: Native to the Paraguay River basin in southern Brazil.

  • Name: Named in honor of tropical fish expert and author Herbert R. Axelrod.

  • Relation: Despite the name, they are a distinct species from the standard Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) and belong to a different genus (Hyphessobrycon).

2. Appearance

  • Coloration: They are defined by two distinct horizontal bands running the length of their body. The lower band is a thick, velvet black, while the upper band is a glowing, iridescent silver-white or greenish-neon.

  • The Eye: A key identifier is the upper half of the iris, which glows a distinct orange-red.

  • Contrast: Their monochromatic colors make them pop beautifully against the green leaves of live plants (as seen in your photo) or dark substrates.

3. Temperament & Behavior

  • Community Safe: They are completely peaceful and suitable for almost any community tank with other non-aggressive fish (e.g., Rasboras, Corydoras, other Tetras).

  • Schooling: Like all tetras, they feel safe in numbers. They must be kept in groups of at least 6, though a school of 10+ looks mesmerizing as they swim in tight formation.

  • Position: They typically occupy the top and middle levels of the water column.

4. Aquarium Care

  • Hardiness: They are generally considered hardier and more robust than the standard Neon Tetra or Cardinal Tetra, making them more forgiving of minor water fluctuations.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: Tropical, 23°C – 28°C (73°F – 82°F).

    • pH: 5.5 – 7.5 (They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water).

  • Lighting: Their iridescent stripe glows best under subdued lighting. Floating plants can help diffuse light and make them feel more secure.

5. Diet

  • Feeding: They are omnivores and eat readily.

  • Recommendations: High-quality flake food is perfect. To condition them for breeding or boost their health, supplement with frozen treats like daphnia, bloodworms, or brine shrimp.

6. Breeding

  • Type: Egg scatterers.

  • Difficulty: Moderate. They are easier to breed than Cardinal Tetras but still require soft, acidic water and low light to spawn successfully. The parents provide no care and will eat their own eggs if not removed.
