Description
1. Origin & Identification
-
Scientific Name: Trigonostigma espei.
-
Common Names: Espei Rasbora, Lambchop Rasbora, False Harlequin.
-
Origin: Native to peat swamp forests and streams in Thailand and Cambodia.
-
Difference from Harlequin Rasbora:
-
Harlequin: Taller body, pinkish color, large triangular black patch.
-
Espei: Slimmer body, intense copper/orange color, narrower black patch that looks like a lamb chop or a hockey stick.
-
2. Appearance
-
Color: The body is a metallic bronze or copper-red that glows under aquarium lights.
-
Markings: The signature black wedge starts mid-body and narrows as it reaches the tail, bordered by a glowing orange outline.
-
Size: A true nano fish, reaching a maximum of 3 cm (1.2 inches).
3. Temperament & Behavior
-
Schooling: These are very tight schoolers. Unlike some tetras that drift apart, Espei Rasboras often swim together in a coordinated pack. You should keep at least 6 to 8, but a group of 12+ creates a stunning “fire-ember” effect.
-
Peaceful: They are completely harmless and make perfect tank mates for other small fish like Corydoras, Tetras, and Shrimp (though they may eat tiny baby shrimp).
-
Activity: They occupy the middle and upper levels of the tank.
4. Aquarium Care
-
Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons.
-
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: Tropical, 23°C – 28°C (73°F – 82°F).
-
pH: 6.0 – 7.5. They prefer slightly acidic water to show their best colors.
-
-
Decor: They look best in tanks with live plants and dark substrate. The green plants contrast beautifully with their copper bodies.
5. Diet
-
Omnivores: They are not picky.
-
Food: High-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods like cyclops or daphnia. Their mouths are small, so ensure the food particles are appropriately sized.
6. Breeding
-
Method: Unlike many fish that scatter eggs on the floor, Trigonostigma species stick their eggs to the undersides of broad leaves (like Cryptocoryne or Anubias).
-
Difficulty: Moderate. They require soft, acidic water and plenty of live food to trigger spawning.
