Description
Scientific Name: Barbonymus schwanenfeldii (Albino variety) Common Name: Albino Tinfoil Barb, Golden Tinfoil Barb Origin: Selective breeding of the species native to Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra).
Physical Appearance This fish is bred specifically for its unique glowing appearance.
-
Coloration: The body lacks dark pigmentation, resulting in a metallic gold or creamy white color that reflects light beautifully.
-
Fins: The dorsal, anal, and tail fins are usually a translucent red or orange, which contrasts sharply against the pale body.
-
Eyes: As a true albino, it possesses distinct pink or bright red eyes.
-
Size: Do not be fooled by their small size in pet stores; they grow very large, reaching 12–14 inches (30–35 cm) in length.
Behavior and Temperament
-
Schooling: They are highly social and must be kept in groups of 5 or more. A lone Tinfoil Barb will be shy and skittish.
-
Activity: They are extremely active, mid-level swimmers. They are known to be “dither fish” for large cichlids because their active swimming makes shy fish feel safe to come out.
-
Aggression: They are peaceful but can be boisterous. They are not aggressive, but they will eat small fish (like Neon Tetras or Guppies) simply because they fit in their mouths.
Care and Maintenance
-
Tank Size: Due to their size and speed, they need a massive tank. A minimum of 75 gallons is required for juveniles, but 125 gallons (475 liters) or more is needed for adults.
-
Jumping: They are powerful jumpers. A heavy, tight-fitting lid is mandatory.
-
Diet: They are greedy omnivores. They need plenty of vegetable matter (spinach, lettuce, algae wafers) mixed with protein (pellets, bloodworms) to stay healthy.
