Colored Zebra Danio

The Colored Zebra Danio is a vibrant, genetically modified version of the classic Zebra Danio. Unlike painted fish, these fish are born with their brilliant neon colors—including Electric Green, Starfire Red, Sunburst Orange, and Galactic Purple—thanks to fluorescent protein genes derived from marine life. They are incredibly hardy, hyper-active schooling fish that are perfect for beginners adding a splash of “glow” to their aquarium. Now in stock

Description

Scientific Name: Danio rerio (GloFish/Fluorescent variant) Common Names: GloFish Danio, Neon Zebra Danio Origin: The original species is from India and Bangladesh, but these colored varieties are lab-created and captive-bred.

Physical Characteristics These fish are famous for their unnatural, high-vis colors.

  • The Glow: Their DNA contains fluorescent proteins found in jellyfish and coral. This means their color is permanent and will not fade. Under blue LED lights or “blacklights,” they actually glow in the dark.

  • Body Shape: They have the same slim, torpedo-like shape as a standard Zebra Danio.

  • Stripes: You can often still see the faint horizontal faint white stripes running along their neon bodies.

  • Size: They remain small, growing to about 1.5 to 2 inches (4–5 cm).

Behavior and Temperament

  • Hyper-Active: They are one of the most active fish in the hobby. They constantly zip back and forth across the top of the tank.

  • Schooling: They are social and feel safest in numbers. A group of 6 or more is essential. You can mix different colors together, and they will still school happily as a “rainbow” group.

  • Temperament: They are peaceful but boisterous. Their fast swimming can sometimes stress out very slow, shy fish (like Bettas or fancy Guppies).

Care and Habitat

  • Hardiness: They are practically bulletproof. They can tolerate a wide range of temperatures and water conditions, making them the #1 choice for starting a new tank.

  • Tank Size: Although they are small, they are sprinters. A 10 to 20-gallon tank (preferably long rather than tall) is best to give them swimming room.

  • Diet: They are greedy omnivores. They will eat anything that fits in their mouths, especially surface-floating flakes and small pellets.
