Description
Scientific Name: Trichogaster lalius (formerly Colisa lalia) Common Names: Dwarf Gourami, Neon Blue Dwarf Gourami, Rainbow Gourami Origin: South Asia (India, West Bengal, Assam, and Bangladesh)
Physical Characteristics This fish is the original pattern from which the “Red Colisa” (you uploaded earlier) was bred.
-
The Pattern: The male features alternating diagonal stripes of iridescent blue and orange-red. The fins are usually patterned with the same colors.
-
Sexual Dimorphism: There is a huge difference between genders. Males (like the one in your photo) are vividly colorful. Females are a plain, silvery-grey color with almost no stripes and are rarely seen in pet stores.
-
Feelers: Like other gouramis, their pelvic fins have evolved into long, sensitive “whiskers” used to explore their environment and communicate with other fish.
-
Size: They stay small and compact, reaching a maximum of 2 to 3 inches (6–7.5 cm).
Behavior and Temperament
-
Labyrinth Organ: They possess a special organ that allows them to gulp atmospheric air. If the water quality is poor or low in oxygen, they can survive by breathing at the surface.
-
Temperament: They are shy and peaceful. They are easily stressed by loud noises or aggressive tank mates.
-
Bubble Nesters: When ready to breed, the male builds a floating nest made of bubbles and saliva at the water’s surface, often weaving bits of plants into it.
Care and Habitat
-
Tank Size: A 10 to 20-gallon tank is ideal.
-
Water Flow: They are not strong swimmers. They prefer calm, slow-moving water. Strong filter currents will stress them out and exhaust them.
-
Decor: They love heavily planted tanks, especially floating plants (like Water Lettuce or Frogbit) which dim the light and provide a place to build nests.
-
Diet: They are omnivores. High-quality flakes, freeze-dried bloodworms, and brine shrimp will help keep their red and blue colors bright.
