The “Bands”: The body features a series of narrow, dark vertical bars. While the name implies “five,” the number of stripes can vary between 5 to 10 depending on the individual fish.

Behavior and Temperament

Schooling: These are nervous, social fish. They must be kept in groups of at least 5. If kept in a school, their stripes often become darker and more vivid due to confidence.

Diet: They are strict herbivores. They will graze on algae and devour most live aquarium plants (except hardy ones like Java Fern or Anubias). They love fresh veggies like zucchini, peas, and spinach.
