Five Band dollar

The Five Band Silver Dollar (Metynnis fasciatus) is a striking variation of the Silver Dollar family. Unlike the plain silver variety, this fish features a metallic golden-silver body patterned with distinct, thin, dark vertical stripes (resembling a tiger’s pattern). Like all Silver Dollars, they are peaceful, vegetarian schooling fish that add lively movement and unique patterns to large freshwater community tanks. Now out of stock

Description

Scientific Name: Metynnis fasciatus Common Names: Tiger Silver Dollar, Striped Silver Dollar, Five-Banded Silver Dollar Origin: South America (Amazon River Basin, specifically Brazil)

Physical Characteristics This fish is valued for its unique markings which break up the solid silver look of typical dollars.

  • The “Bands”: The body features a series of narrow, dark vertical bars. While the name implies “five,” the number of stripes can vary between 5 to 10 depending on the individual fish.

  • Coloration: The background color is silver, but often has a golden or greenish sheen, making the black stripes stand out.

  • Size: They grow to approximately 5 to 6 inches (13–15 cm) in diameter, making them similar in size to the common Silver Dollar.

  • Body: They possess the signature deep, laterally compressed (flat) disc shape.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Schooling: These are nervous, social fish. They must be kept in groups of at least 5. If kept in a school, their stripes often become darker and more vivid due to confidence.

  • Diet: They are strict herbivores. They will graze on algae and devour most live aquarium plants (except hardy ones like Java Fern or Anubias). They love fresh veggies like zucchini, peas, and spinach.

  • Temperament: Very peaceful. They are great tank mates for other non-aggressive medium-to-large fish (like Severums, Geophagus, or Catfish).

Care and Habitat

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is required for a small school, though 75 gallons is better to allow them swimming room.

  • Water Conditions: They prefer warm (75°F–82°F), soft, and slightly acidic water.

  • Decor: Provide plenty of open swimming space in the middle of the tank, with hiding spots (driftwood or rocks) at the back to help them feel secure.
