Description
Scientific Name: Gymnocorymbus ternetzi (Color varieties) Common Names: GloFish Tetra, Colored Skirt Tetra, Widow Tetra Origin: The original species is from South America (Paraguay/Guapore Basins), but these colored varieties are captive-bred.
Physical Characteristics These fish are identical in shape to the Black Widow Tetra but differ drastically in color.
-
Colors: They are sold in a mix of fluorescent colors like pink, bright green, electric blue, purple, and orange. These colors are permanent and do not fade.
-
Body Shape: They have a “tetragon” shape, which is tall and compressed.
-
The “Skirt”: Their most defining feature is the over-developed anal fin (bottom fin) that looks like a long, flowing black or transparent skirt.
-
Size: They grow to about 2 to 2.5 inches (5–6 cm) in length.
Behavior and Temperament
-
Schooling: Even though they are different colors, they recognize each other as the same species. They will school together happily. You should keep a mixed group of at least 6 or more to keep them stress-free.
-
Activity: They are fast-moving, mid-level swimmers.
-
Fin Nipping: Like the standard Widow Tetra, they can be fin nippers. Avoid keeping them with slow, long-finned fish like Bettas or fancy Guppies, as the Tetras may harass them.
Care and Habitat
-
Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is best to give them swimming space and reduce aggression.
-
Decor: Their bright colors pop amazingly well against dark gravel or dark backgrounds. They also look great under blue LED “moonlights,” which make them glow.
-
Diet: They are unfussy omnivores. They will eat standard flakes, micro pellets, and frozen foods.
