Mono Sebae

The Mono Sebae (Monodactylus sebae), also known as the African Moony, is a striking, diamond-shaped fish native to West Africa. It is easily recognized by its tall, flattened body, silver scales, and distinct black vertical stripes that run across its eye and body. Though often sold as a freshwater fish, it is actually a brackish water species that thrives best in saltwater as it matures. Now out of Stock

Description

Scientific Name: Monodactylus sebae Common Names: Mono Sebae, African Moony, Sebae Monos Origin: Eastern Atlantic coast of Africa (from the Canary Islands to Angola)

Physical Appearance The Mono Sebae is famous for its unique geometric look.

  • Body Shape: It has a highly compressed, “tall” body that is often deeper than it is long, giving it a triangular or diamond-like silhouette. The dorsal and anal fins curve backward, accentuating this shape.

  • Coloration: The body is primarily a shimmering silver. It features three distinct dark black bands: one running through the eye, a second just behind the gill cover, and a third curving from the tip of the dorsal fin down to the anal fin.

  • Size: These fish can grow quite large, reaching up to 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) in length. However, because of their tall shape, they can reach up to 12 inches in height, requiring a deep aquarium.

Habitat and Care This is a species with specific water requirements that change over its lifetime.

  • Salinity: In the wild, they inhabit estuaries and mangroves. While juveniles can tolerate freshwater, they require brackish water (a mix of fresh and salt) to thrive long-term. As they reach adulthood, they are best kept in full marine (saltwater) setups.

  • Tank Requirements: Due to their height and active swimming nature, they need a large, tall tank (minimum 50–75 gallons).

Behavior and Diet

  • Temperament: They are schooling fish and are most comfortable when kept in groups of five or more. Without a school, they can become skittish or nervous.

  • Diet: They are omnivores with a hearty appetite, readily eating dried flakes, pellets, frozen foods (like bloodworms or brine shrimp), and vegetable matter.
