Description
Scientific Name: Heros efasciatus (Gold/Red Spotted variant) Common Names: Red Spotted Severum, Gold Severum, Hero Cichlid Origin: South America (Amazon Basin) – This specific color morph is captive-bred.
Physical Characteristics
-
Coloration: The base color ranges from a pale gold to a deep yellow-orange. The defining feature is the intense red spotting that covers the flanks, anal fin, and dorsal fin. The density of the spots varies—some are lightly dusted, while “Super Red” varieties are almost solid red.
-
Body Shape: They have a deep, laterally compressed (flat) body that is tall and oval/round.
-
Size: They are substantial fish, growing to 8 to 10 inches (20–25 cm) in length.
Behavior and Temperament
-
Personality: They are intelligent and often recognize their owners, coming to the glass to beg for food.
-
Temperament: Unlike many other large cichlids (like Oscars or Devils), Severums are remarkably peaceful. They rarely bother other fish, though they can be territorial during breeding.
-
Tank Mates: Because of their gentle nature, they do well with other peaceful medium-to-large fish like Angelfish, Festivums, and Geophagus.
Care and Habitat
-
Tank Size: Due to their size, a single Severum needs at least a 55-gallon tank. A group or pair requires 75–100 gallons.
-
Diet: They are omnivores with a strong preference for vegetables. They love peas, lettuce, and zucchini. Note: They will eat almost any live plant in your tank.
-
Water Conditions: They are hardy but prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5).
