Siamese Algae Eater

The Siamese Algae Eater (Crossocheilus oblongus) is arguably the most hardworking utility fish in the freshwater hobby. It is widely famous for being one of the only fish that will eat Black Beard Algae (BBA). Native to Southeast Asia, this torpedo-shaped fish features a distinct black stripe running from its nose to the tip of its tail. Unlike many other algae eaters that get lazy or aggressive as they age, the “True” Siamese Algae Eater remains a relatively peaceful and active scavenger. Now in stock

Description

Scientific Name: Crossocheilus oblongus (formerly Crossocheilus siamensis) Common Name: Siamese Algae Eater, SAE Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand and Malaysia)

Physical Characteristics It is very important to identify this fish correctly because there are many look-alikes (like the Flying Fox) that are aggressive.

  • The Stripe: The defining feature of a True SAE is the black horizontal stripe that runs from the nose, through the eye, and extends all the way to the very tip of the tail fin. The edges of this stripe are usually slightly jagged or “zigzagged,” not smooth.

  • Fins: The fins are completely clear and transparent (no red or yellow tint).

  • Body: It has a slender, shark-like body with a sucker-type mouth and one pair of small barbels (whiskers).

  • Size: They grow larger than many people expect, reaching 5 to 6 inches (13–15 cm).

Behavior and Temperament

  • The Algae Hunter: They are prized for eating Red Algae (Black Beard Algae/Staghorn Algae), which most other fish (like Plecos) refuse to eat.

  • Perching: You will often see them “resting” on broad plant leaves or rocks, propping themselves up with their pelvic fins.

  • Temperament: They are generally peaceful community fish. However, as they grow older, they can become territorial toward their own kind or fish that look similar (like Red Tail Sharks). They are active, fast swimmers.

Care and Habitat

  • Tank Size: Because they are active swimmers that grow to 6 inches, a minimum of 30 gallons (preferably long) is needed.

  • Jumpers: They are known to jump out of tanks, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.

  • Diet: While they eat algae, they are omnivores. Once the algae is gone, they need sinking wafers, veggies (zucchini), and protein-rich foods. Note: If you overfeed them commercial food, they may get lazy and stop eating algae.
