Description
Scientific Name: Balantiocheilos melanopterus Common Names: Silver Shark, Bala Shark, Tricolor Shark Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Borneo, Sumatra, and Malaysia)
Physical Characteristics The Silver Shark is admired for its clean, hydrodynamic look.
-
Body: It features a long, metallic silver body with large, distinct scales.
-
Fins: The dorsal, caudal (tail), anal, and pelvic fins are deeply forked and edged in bold black and yellow/white, giving it a striking “tricolor” appearance.
-
Size: This is one of the most misunderstood fish in the hobby regarding size. While often sold at 2–3 inches, they can rapidly grow to 12–14 inches (30–35 cm) in length.
Behavior and Temperament
-
Schooling: Unlike true sharks, these are social fish that feel safest in groups. They should be kept in a school of at least 3 to 5. If kept alone, they can become timid and stressed.
-
Temperament: They are generally peaceful and fit well in community tanks with other medium-to-large fish. However, due to their size, they may accidentally eat very small fish (like Neon Tetras) that fit in their mouths.
-
Jumping: They are powerful, skittish swimmers and expert jumpers. A tight-fitting lid is mandatory, as they will jump out of the tank if spooked.
Care and Habitat
-
Tank Size: Because they are large, active swimmers that need to live in groups, they require a massive tank. A minimum of 125 gallons (470+ liters) is recommended for a full-grown school.
-
Diet: They are omnivores and not picky. They will accept flakes, pellets, freeze-dried foods, and live treats like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
-
Water Conditions: They prefer clean, well-oxygenated water with a neutral pH (6.5–7.5) and tropical temperatures (72°F–82°F).
