Description
Scientific Name: Myleus schomburgkii Common Names: Single Band Silver Dollar, Black Bar Silver Dollar, Disk Tetra Origin: South America (Amazon River Basin, Brazil, Venezuela)
Physical Characteristics This fish is prized for its specific marking which separates it from the plain Silver Dollar.
-
The “Single Band”: The most defining feature is a thick, vertical jet-black bar located in the center of the fish’s flank.
-
Body Shape: It has the classic disk-like, flattened body shape.
-
Coloration: Apart from the black bar, the body is a metallic silver. In adult males, the anal fin (bottom fin) often develops a “hook” shape and can turn a reddish-orange color.
-
Size: These grow significantly larger than the common Silver Dollar (Metynnis argenteus). They can reach 9 to 16 inches (23–40 cm) in captivity, depending on the specific genetic variant.
Behavior and Temperament
-
Schooling: Like all Silver Dollars, they are social and get stressed if kept alone. They must be kept in groups of 5 or more.
-
Diet: They are herbivores. In the wild, they eat fruits and leaves that fall into the river. In the aquarium, they will eat almost any live plant you put in the tank. They love algae wafers, romaine lettuce, spinach, and peas.
-
Temperament: Despite their large size, they are very peaceful. They are skittish and can be easily spooked by sudden movements or loud noises.
Care and Habitat
-
Tank Size: Because they grow larger than standard Silver Dollars, they need a very large tank. A minimum of 125 gallons is recommended for a school of adults.
-
Water Flow: They inhabit river environments, so they appreciate moderate to strong water flow and highly oxygenated water.
-
Decor: Use rocks, driftwood, and plastic plants (since they will eat real ones). Leave plenty of open swimming space in the middle of the tank.
